Education doesn’t always happen behind a desk—sometimes, it happens on the banks of a crystal-clear, spring-fed river.
In a world increasingly dominated by screens, Discover Oregon, a unique middle school enrichment class, is shifting the focus back to the natural world. Designed to connect young learners directly with their local environment, the course blends classroom exploration with real-world outdoor adventure.
The class follows a unique rhythm: every three weeks, students swap their traditional classroom setting for the rugged, diverse landscapes of Central Oregon. But these aren't just field trips—they are the culmination of weeks of targeted preparation.
Leading up to each excursion, students spend their daily class time diving deep into the science and history of the region:
Watershed Dynamics: Understanding how snowpack, rivers, and volcanic rock shape our local water supply.
Regional Ecology: Studying native plant species, forest ecosystems, and local wildlife habitats.
Geology & Geography: Learning how Central Oregon’s distinct landscapes were carved over millennia.
By the time students step onto the trail, they aren't just looking at nature—they’re reading it.
For their most recent trip, the Discover Oregon class headed to the famous Metolius River, one of the most remarkable river systems in the Pacific Northwest. Emerging fully formed from the base of Black Butte, the Metolius offers a living laboratory for young naturalists.
By bridging classroom learning with outdoor experience, Discover Oregon is doing more than teaching science—it’s fostering the next generation of environmental stewards right here in our own backyard.
