Who We Are

We're a public charter school serving students in grades 6-12 across Central Oregon through personalized, proficiency-based learning. We're not here to fit students into a system; we're here to build systems around students.

Our Story

In 2008, Jon Bullock, the founder of RPA, sat with colleagues around a kitchen table and talked about what kind of education they wanted for their children. They envisioned a place where students would be challenged to create their own education while being deeply valued for who they are: where learning would be personalized and students could give back to their community. That kitchen table dream became the Redmond Proficiency Academy.

The doors of RPA opened in the fall of 2009 to 150 students. Now, 900 students in grades 6-12 from all over Central Oregon choose to attend RPA for our unique approach.

What We Believe

We're relentless about providing high-quality education while supporting our students, families, and the Central Oregon community with the highest level of service. We believe that students thrive when they have ownership of their learning, when their progress is measured by real mastery rather than seat time, when they're part of a connected community, and when they have access to excellent programs and academic opportunities. We continuously challenge the status quo in education.

What Sets Us Apart

Student Ownership and Choice. Your education reflects your unique strengths, interests, and goals. We give students genuine agency to choose their path and pace, whether that means diving into AP Capstone, exploring the Future Center, pursuing dual enrollment, or charting an entirely different course. You're not a number in our system; you're a person with choices.

Proficiency. We measure what actually matters: demonstrated mastery. Progress isn't about seat time or compliance; it's about what you can actually do. This approach respects your individual pace while maintaining rigorous academic standards and ensuring you're truly prepared for what comes next.

Community. Through the RPA Cares Initiative and integrated service learning, students don't just study about impact; they create it. We're committed to meaningful partnerships that address real needs in Central Oregon, from food security to health awareness to access to opportunity. We also believe in building a strong community within our school walls, where students and staff feel they belong.

Excellence in Programs and Academics. From middle school through graduation, our programs grow with our students and provide genuine choice in how they engage with learning. We offer rigorous academics across all subjects, alongside vibrant programs in theater, music, and visual arts that cultivate creativity and expression. Our STEM programs prepare students for careers and our robotics team has been awarded accolades at competitions across the country. We've designed multiple pathways for students to discover their passions and develop their talents.

What is a Charter School?

Charter schools are publicly funded, independently operated schools that offer innovative approaches to education while maintaining full accountability to the public. Unlike traditional public schools, charter schools have the flexibility to design their curriculum, staffing, and operations to meet the needs of their students. RPA is authorized by the State of Oregon and held to rigorous academic and operational standards, ensuring we deliver on our mission while serving the communities we're part of.

Governance & Transparency

As a public charter school, RPA operates with full transparency and public accountability.
