Tuesday at the High School: Clay, Kilns, and Creativity in Ceramics

Walk into the high school ceramics studio on Tuesday, and you’re immediately hit with a mix of earthy wet clay, drying plaster, and a soft buzz of gentle conversation. It’s dynamic, it’s messy, and it’s easily one of the most electric creative spaces in the building.

In an age where so much of a teenager’s day is spent behind a glowing screen, ceramics offers something rare and essential: a completely tactile reset. You can’t rush a potter’s wheel, and you certainly can’t double-tap your way through a collapsed cylinder.

Around the room, everyone is in a different stage of the creative process:

  • At the wheels: Students are figuring out the delicate art of centering—learning that if you try to force the clay, it wins every time.

  • At the handbuilding tables: Coils, slabs, and pinched clay are being transformed into everything from functional mugs to abstract sculptural forms.

What makes the ceramics studio special isn't just the glossy finished piece, but the daily habit of stepping away from notifications to engage with something real. Clay breaks, cracks, and sags, but showing up to the wheel day after day builds a rhythm of patient practice. In that physical space, students learn that stepping back to start over isn't a setback; it's the very foundation of a steady creative habit.
