RPA Students Take Wilderness and Remote First Aid Class for June Term

For the past two and a half weeks students in instructor Tamara Bremont’s Wilderness and Remote First Aid class, students have been learning how to increase the rate of survival for individuals caught in delayed help situations.

The Red Cross course, based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines,  aligns with OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs.

“Although I haven’t taught this course for several years, it is one of my favorites because it is very hands-on,” said Bremont.

Outside activities coupled with guest speakers including individuals from the Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol, Deschutes County Search and Rescue, and a local Eagle Scout add to the core Red Cross Curriculum.  In addition, students had the opportunity to learn about water rescue from the aquatic director or the Cascade Swim Center.

Junior Anne McCook added, “I have learned so much in this class! I feel that I am going to be safer when I go backpacking and hiking with my friends and family.”

Students in the course had the opportunity to be certified in Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED as well as earn their Wilderness and Remote First Aid Certification if they completed this 12 day course.
