Redmond Proficiency Academy performs well at regional Oregon Battle of the Books competition

Redmond Proficiency Academy’s high school team took second place during the annual regional Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) competition on Saturday, March 2 in Prineville, while the middle school team battled through to the Great Eight round and ultimately lost in the Final Four battle.
OBOB is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in third-twelfth grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints, according to the OBOB website.
“I am proud of the hard work our RPA students put into OBOB throughout the year, and I am equally proud that they handled the final outcome with grace,” instructor Amy Mitchell said.
The high school team, coached by Mitchell, includes freshmen Hadassah Hughes and Jade Bahr, sophomores Kristine Parker, Garrett Herr, Brooke Everest, and Josiah Mickel-Alternate, .
The middle school team, coached by instructor Brent Walters, includes six-graders Diana Behrndt, Pearl Page-Norton, Rihanna Gonzalez, Calvin Hamman, and Ryder Perry.

The OBOB State Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 4 at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore.
