A Look at Jan Term Class: Cartoons, Calcs & Conics

Students in math instructor Bayley Killpack’s Jan Term class, “Cartoons, Calcs & Conics,” are learning about the math concept of conic sections by programming TI-83 graphing calculators to draw pictures.

A conic section, conic or a quadratic curve is a curve obtained from a cone’s surface intersecting a plane.

“It’s a super fun, engaging, and rewarding way of solidifying students’ ability to recognize equation types graphically, then write the equations in terms of x and y from a coordinate plane,” Killpack said.

The hands-on class offers opportunities for students to work individually and display their own creativity, while also working in unity as the students work through the learning together.
